On Call International
Dr. Robert Wheeler has served as the Chief Medical Officer for On Call International since October 2005. In his capacity as CMO, Dr. Wheeler, together with his team of four physicians and two nurse case managers, is responsible for the management of more than 10,000 medical cases worldwide each year. He is the past Chairperson for the Medical Committee of the International Assistance Group, an organization of more than 60 global medical and travel assistance companies. Dr. Wheeler received his medical degree from the University of Massachusetts Medical School, is Board certified in Emergency Medicine and Internal Medicine and is a Fellow of the American College of Emergency Physicians and the American Academy of Emergency Medicine.
Dr. Wheeler has more than three decades of experience in Emergency Medicine. He has also been involved in the practice of Cruise Ship Medicine, providing onboard medical care and cruise line medical consulting services, for more than 25 years. He is a founding member and past-Chairperson for the American College of Emergency Physicians Section on Cruise Ship and Maritime Medicine, an international group of physicians that works in partnership with the cruise industry to ensure the provision of quality shipboard medical services for cruise ship guests and crew members. Dr. Wheeler has developed and coordinated several educational programs for cruise ship doctors and nurses, highlighting a variety of cruise ship and travel medicine topics, including Norovirus outbreak prevention and mitigation. He has also authored chapters on cruise ship medicine in two popular travel medicine textbooks.
