Women’s Healthcare & Insurance Leadership Summit

The first Women’s Healthcare & Insurance Leadership Summit was held yesterday at the 6th World Medical Tourism & Global Healthcare Congress (WMTC). The event brought together women from all sectors of the healthcare world together in order to discuss what it takes to be a great leader.

The event began with an introduction from Renée-Marie Stephano, president of the Medical Tourism Association® and was followed by Catherine Robinson-Walker, president of The Leadership Studio® and author of the books Leading Valiantly in Health Care: Four Steps to Sustainable Success and Women and Leadership in Health Care: The Journey to Authenticity and Power.

Topics covered under Ms. Robinson-Walker’s presentation comprised what it takes to excel at leadership. What she referred too as “the six leadership seductions” were a collection of the common mistakes all leaders make. These are believing you are correct to the point of not listening to others suggestions, telling stories that are not always true to yourself, spacing out during meetings, distracting yourself with superfluous information and focusing all of your attention to a single employee. While leaders are not guilty of all of these at the same time, most are likely to commit one of them. Overcoming these will lead to success both for yourself and for your company.

Ms. Robinson-Walker also discussed the “three levels of reality” in order to help attendees realize who they are as a whole. The concept of the three levels of reality comes from aboriginal beliefs. The first level is the essence, which comprises what you are at the core, the spirit of your being. The second level is the consensus reality, which is what we measure. The third and final level is the dream, which consists of our aspirations. Through examination of these levels, one can determine who their true self is, and become a better leader because of the process.

Following Ms. Robinson-Walker’s presentation was a discussion lead by Karen Timmons, Selin Yildirim Peker, Dorothy Nyong’o, and moderated by Giselle Cheminand. The discussion covered matters ranging from what caused them to rise to the heights they have achieved, the various roles female leaders play in life, the challenges they face and how they deal with it, and balancing family and work.

The summit served as a great start to the 6th World Medical Tourism & Global Healthcare Congress. The summit provided attendees the opportunity to discuss with each other the lessons being presented, and how they apply to themselves as individuals. This is an essential part of the conference experience, learning while sharing and networking with fellow attendees.
